In case you missed it the most epic announcement of the actions of a pop culture icon just dropped: William Shatner is going to space! How amazing is that? Captain Kirk going to space for real?!?! I’m not that big of a Trekkie but I sure do love me some William Shatner!
And while this is awesome in and of itself, this isn’t the first time that the influence of the fictional “Star Trek” has manifested in our real world. For those who may not have known or forgot, once upon a time ago the bridge crew of the Enterprise were the guests of honor when the REAL Enterprise was rolled out for all to see… well, everybody but the Captain…
I guess this is the Shat’s way of making up for that really stupid blunder on his part. As of this writing, I haven’t been able to find an official reason as to why he wasn’t there but ego’s were ego’s back then. Oh well, let the past be the past right? Right!
Being as fanboy as I can be, this announcement gets me stoked about Kirk Merch (plus that sounds kind of cool)… and on that note, I’m thinking to commemorate the moment I just may go aheaad and get my hands on the new 14″ Mego Kirk via my longtime pals at Entertainment Earth. Hmmm……
Hell, I think I may need to give in to more impulse buying and round out the whole old school crew via the Mego way. Also could be a really good time to give the folks at ZLC Collectibles a shot…. I see tribble size trouble on my hands if I give into all this madness.
But what a way to go! I think I’ll start right here…. I’ll let you know how it goes 🙂
Got this cute little Dr. McCoy with a recent order I placed with Entertainment Earth! I love it when they’re celebrating and passing it on to us. You don’t know what you’ll get, but it sure is fun!

This second look at the Series 1 Love Gun era KISS retro action figures is pretty unflinching in some flaws, with the main one being that the Paul / Star Child I have has one leg that’s shorter than the other making it a bear to get him to stand without a stand. Otherwise the set is a lot of fun and I easily recommend them.
The set now rests on the mantle at my house and have really grown on me. Also to note in between Look 1 and this post, Bif Bang Pow announced a variant, Blood Spitting Demon that you can add to the collection.Click the pic to get hum!
And remember, ordering in the month of April gets you a FREE GIFT from Entertainment Earth as part of their 20th Anniversary celebration! How incredibly cool is that! So get the full set or the deluxe Alive II stage set today and Rock N Roll all night and party everyday with my favorite online retailer Entertainment Earth!
One more thing…. be sure to check out my KISS tribute page on the extended, fresher designed extension of the Toy Box. I forgot how much KISS raving I’ve done over the years 😉
As a kid I absolutely LOVED model kits. Didn’t matter if it was cars, characters or Star Wars ships, each one was so much fun to me. Not that I was terribly good at them but I really enjoyed putting them together. I was good at putting them together, but it was the details where I got lost. Painting was never my forte and the wet and slide decals always seemed problematic. But I didn’t care, I still had a ball with them. And I really enjoyed it when my dad would step into help on the ones he knew I really wanted done just right.
One that comes to mind the most is the big honkin’ General Lee that came out around ’81. It was a massive model kit and just close enough to scale to my 8 inch Mego Bo and Luke Duke. He worked on that thing for almost two weeks getting every part and piece just right and of course the decals of the now infamous Confederate Flag applied just right. Man, I love those memories.
Recently I got into watching episodes of Monsterama hosted by Elvira Mistress of the Dark and came across one that featured the monster kits from once upon a time ago.
That got me the itch back but I haven’t pulled the trigger just yet on picking up a new kit. Frankly because; 1. I know my detail work will still be lacking. 2. I’m really crazy busy with work stuff and 3. Dad’s not here to fix it. But then again maybe he is.
Those memories I mentioned truly mean a lot to me and now with my daughter turning into quite the crafty little girl (in the skill area not the powers of persuasion, but then again she is getting good in that realm too) I think it would be neat to let her take a crack at these. I just wish the price tag was the same as it was then.
I noticed a few years back that the prices of model kits had went up significantly from when I was a kid. I’m not talking about inflation, I mean overall. These buggers aren’t cheap, even for the exact same styles and kits, be it snap together or basic glue together kits. The digging I did at the time blamed the higher cost for petroleum and in turn the plastics used. Stupid OPEC, sucking the fun out of everything, right? And that’s when I get really happy to see sales, like the one going on at Entertainment Earth now through July 21st (2015, if you show up way late).
Browsing through the selection the temptation is growing to go for it again. I’m realy digging the ’66 Batman kit….
The Mars Attacks! Is pretty sweet too but I know there is NO WAY I could ever get the paint scheme right. Not a negative Nancy, just a realist. Seriously, look at that beautiful creature!
One that I did have when I was a kid that I really enjoyed was the Battlestar Galactica Vipers. Star Wars rip off or not that ship hands down kicks the X-Wing’s posterior.
The ones though that are really, really, really, pushing me to the “Add to Cart” button are the Munsters kits. The residents of 1313 Mockingbird Lane were so influential on me as a kid that for them I would like to take a really dedicated crack at them to do them justice. Probably take me the better part of a year for sure but man they are sweet.
Or I could just cheese out and go the Pre-Assembled route … but that really isn’t very much fun and no one would ever believe me if I tried to pass it off as my own creation. Not that I’d do that but, well… you know 😉
In all actuality though I will most likely go back to the basics. A simple car kit. Although not exactly “simple” The exhaust systems were always problematic for me. Getting the completed engine back in the chassis with the manifolds attached was always a real squeeze and one almost always popped off despite the Testors glue that stunk up a room like no other. Dad, where are ya when I need ya? Well perhaps your granddaughter can help me out a little. She’s developing your skills and sense of humor so I think there may be hope for me yet.
Greetings gang! In KEEPING WITH MY NEW THEME OF “Adventures from Jim’s Toy Box” I had an idea and I need YOUR help with. As is pretty obvious to see around these parts, I’ve got a thing for Entertainment Earth. Why? Because they were the first company to give me a crack at fulfilling a true dream; being a professional toy reviewer.
When I started Jim’s toy Box all those years ago it was a two fold mission. The first being to learn how to blog and the second is the aforementioned goal. I feel confident in saying that I’ve done both but now I want to take it to the next level by bringing you dear reader more into the fold. “How you gonna do that, Jim?” Glad you asked!
For the first couple of years of being an affiliate with Entertainment Earth I received a small percentage of referral sales. That was extremely cool but frankly I’m not in this for the money so much as I am in the mission of encouraging people of all ages to PLAY. So keeping in that spirit I’ve switched over to receiving store credit for my efforts and now I’ve built up some bank and I want you to help me spend it.
What I’ve done is pulled five items that have tickled my fancy and peaked my curiosity and perhaps yours as well. While I am an action figure guy, obviously of the 8 inch, retro clothed style variety I really want to branch out. So dig these options and help me decide. I’m going to run this for a week (starting today, Monday July 6th through this coming Sunday the 12th) and announce the choice next Monday and place the order. The review will follow as soon as I get the little jewel in my hands.
So check out my selections and lets have some fun!
Selection 1: Curly from Figures Toy Company….
Okay, okay, I know. I’m always doing these style figures BUT, I haven’t seen one of these up close and personal. Plus who doesn’t love Curly?
Selection 2: X-Metal Earth model
These I’ve seen in the wild and they incredibly difficult BUT I want to take a crack at one. I can see doing a build video with this one.
Selection 3: Superman Apron
This one has the potential for a lot of fun. I’m thinking if you guys and gals choose this one I’ll do a cooking / recipe video. I’ve got a couple dishes I would like ot share. What? Of course I can cook! Look at me. As a buddy of mine who was a professional chef used to say; “Never trust a skinny cook.” You can totally trust me.
Selection 4: Disney Frozen The Essential Guide Hardcover Book
Like most fathers of little girls, I am quite well versed in all things FROZEN. Or at least I think I am. This one could be fun with my daughter helping out in giving this book a really good once over.
Selection 5: Hamlet Plush Finger Puppet Magnet Set
This is so weird it may actually turn into something cool. If you select this one I’ll put together a puppet show featuring a scene from the play that this set is inspired by. What? Nothing wrong with getting a little culture around this joint.
Okay, there are our contestants. Make your selections via Facebook by commenting on this thread OR email me your choice at jimsmegos@yahoo.com . I think this is going to be fun.
Actually that’s a good thing to do. BIG sale today over at Entertainment Earth on their LOST 8 inch classic Mego style action figures. Again I’m not the biggest fan of the shows but the figures are fun (as far as regular people figures go) and if nothing else they can make for some great items to use for customs. Some of my observations from a while back can be found HERE to show you what I mean… Check it out!
Happy Independence Day my fellow American’s and dear readers from all over the globe who have found it in their surfing routines to pop into my Toy Box on a regular basis! To celebrate I am extremely excited and honored to get another opportunity to review some really sweet stuff courtesy of the great folks at Entertainment Earth and Royal Bobbles! AND the even better part is I get to give it away when I’m done (That’s the part where you cheer really loud). As far as the contest goes… I’ll give you the lowdown on that at the end of this fun little romp through Bobble Head land.
Being that I am a giving guy I also present to you the full line up of Royal Bobble Heads available NOW (and on sale through July 8th, 2014 ) at Entertainment Earth.
To really get into the spirit of the season check out this super sweet line up of our commanders in chief… ( I still think its a travesty that President Taft has gotten the shaft so far. But in fairness I’d bet shipping that big lug would get pricey.)
Confession time: Prior to this promotion I didn’t have a terrible amount of interest in bobble heads. I thought they were funny but not exactly my cup of collecting tea. However actually having them in my hands I gotta tell you, these are indeed a lot of fun to have around the house. I’m actually a little bummed that I am going to be parting ways with these fellow’s and gal but since it’s you dear reader I know they’ll be going to a great home. I am however going to be adding “The Count” to my own collection very soon because he’s just that damn cool!
For this review a lot of the basic points are consistent with each and every one of these. So I’ll start by saying that:
1. The overall quality of each figure is top shelf. Being that my collection consists mostly of plastic items it was a cool change up to have these ceramic marvels in hand. With that said please note, these bobble heads are NOT TOYS and not intended for children under the age of 13. That of course does not in any shape or form take away from these fantastic collectibles.
Having gotten the taste for them I can see they are a lot of fun and can even lead to inspiration! Think about the ideas that your muse could whisper in your ear once it was tweaked by the likes of these historical icons….
It’s like that pondering of “Which five people would you love to have dinner with?” Except in this case it’s not hypothetical, it’s a totally real option!
2. The packaging is colorful, informative and designed so the figures are protected perfectly for storage or for shipping off to someone as a gift. Speaking of which…
3. They make excellent gifts! Seriously. Considering the wide range of personalities available , when your looking for that “fun” gift for someone these are awesome!
Think about it; what better way could there be to playfully torture your favorite dyed in the wool Conservative than with a mini Barack Obama chastising them daily?
Or your raging liberal pals will be driven bonkers by the cool confidence that can only come from the Gipper? But of course these fun bobble heads are not just meant for irony, they’re great conversation pieces and a solid way to help break the ice on those friends and coworkers who up until the point that they get one of these from you, never really understood your collecting hobby.
4. The price point is also good for gifting be it personal or for the office party. Ranging from a MSRP of $18.99 to $24.99 the price tag stays within the comfort level of good taste and office gift etiquette plus it would be a fun way for you to play without breaking your own budget over that loser in accounting that you actually can’t stand but unfortunately drew his name out of the hat. Seriously, it’s what Jesus would do.
5. Again I wasn’t a big bobble head fan before but now I totally get it. What a fun way to grab a snapshot of past and current pop culture personalities! Not only do you get to show you are the most tuned in kid around the water cooler, once the fad fades you’ve got a really cool reminder of something that made your life a little brighter. Like those times when you marathon watched American Pickers so you were boned up for yard sale season.
Those are the main points I feel the need to point out as positives. In my normal style I try to point out any negatives that I see or offer up my thoughts on why you shouldn’t buy a particular item. In this instance I can honestly say I got nothing. The price is good, the quality is excellent, the idea is fun and the end result will leave you and anyone you happen to gift one of these to smiling. To prove my point on the gift aspect I now offer you the chance to get one as a gift from me to you. But this time around I am going to make you work for it a little. Here’s how the game works:
Below you will see 6 videos that feature lots of looks at the Royal Bobbles that Entertainment Earth sent me for the sake of this review. What you have to do is watch them and write down the “Independence Day Code Phrase” when it comes up in the video.
Once you’ve done that jot ’em all down in an email and send them to me at jimsmegos@yahoo.com along with your name, mailing address and the six “Independence Day Code Phrase’s”
NOW HERE”S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART –
In the subject line you have to say which one of the six you want to win. A couple hoops to jump through but come on gang it’s FREE STUFF!
And now for the rules:
No purchase necessary to enter (but feel free to buy as much and many as you want)…
Contest ends August 1st, 2014 at 12:01 AM Central. So get your submissions in and have everyone else you know to play along. I’m actually really curious to see which of the Royal Bobbles is the most and least popular.
The odds of winning are completely determined by the number of entries received. So at this point you truly do have just as good a shot as anybody.
Of course once you’ve collected all of the “Independence Day Code Phrase’s” you could share them with the world, but that would be a terrible douche bag thing to do. So don’t or I will disqualify you, block you and let everyone know it was you. I’m an easy going guy but really loath anyone who wants to ruin it for everyone else.
I will never, EVER share any of your contact information. In fact I don’t even keep a database for my own use. This is a fun place free from annoying marketing outreaches beyond whats on these pages. And I don’t do spammy emails. You may like that sort of thing but I don’t so I don’t do it. To quote Val Kilmer as the legendary gambler Doc Holliday; “My hypocrisy only goes so far.”
Alright all of that’s out of the way: Happy Independence Day and Now, Go Play!
Jim 07/04/2014
America’s First President and a mighty fine dancer; George Washington!
Our current Commander In Chief that has two more years (as of this writing) to do something that will effectively piss off everyone in the country at least once; Barack Obama.
So there ya go gang, watch ’em, jot down and email in the “Jim’s Toy Box / Entertainment Earth / Royal Bobbles – Independence Day Code Phrase’s” to jimsmegos@yahoo.com and be sure to show and tell your friends about this contest .
